Steven EPSTEIN is the John C. Shaffer Professor in the Humanities, Professor of Sociology, and Director of the Science in Human Culture Program at Northwestern University.
He studies the contested production of knowledge, especially biomedical knowledge, with an emphasis on the interplay among social movements, experts, and health institutions, and with a focus on the politics of sexuality, gender, and race.
Professor EPSTEIN is the author of the prize-winning books Impure Science : AIDS, Activism, and the Politics of Knowledge and Inclusion : The Politics of Difference in Medical Research.
He is a coeditor of Three Shots at Prevention : The HPV Vaccine and the Politics of Medicine’s Simple Solutions, which will be published later this year. Professor Epstein serves on the editorial boards of a number of journals, including Social Studies of Science, Public Understanding of Science, and Sexualities.
He is a former director of the Science Studies Program at the University of California, San Diego.
